Sputnik News- Amid rumors of possible US withdrawal from the Iranian nuclear deal prompted by a "calm before the storm" statement by President Donald Trump, another P5+1 group member that brokered the agreement back in 2015, China, has voiced strong support for the JCPOA.
Beijing hopes that the Iranian nuclear agreement will be further implemented despitereports aboutpossible US withdrawal fromthe deal, spokeswoman ofthe Chinese Foreign Ministry Hua Chunying said Monday.
"The comprehensive agreement onIran is a good example ofsettling an international problem throughnegotiations, which played an important, positive role insustaining the international non-proliferation regime and ensuring regional peace and stability inthe Middle East. We hope that this agreement will be further implemented," the spokeswoman said.
Beijing's statement came amidrumors ofthe possible US withdrawal fromthe Iranian nuclear deal fueled byTrump's controversial remark duringa dinner formilitary commanders attended byreporters. Trump puzzled the White House media pool onThursday evening, referring tothe time duringwhich he posed fora photo withthe countrys military leaders as "the calm beforethe storm."
The statement prompted media speculations, saying that the US is going towithdraw fromthe Iranian nuclear deal withThe Washington Post reporting citing anonymous officials thatTrump was expected toannouncewithina week that he would "decertify" the international nuclear deal withIran because it was not inthe US national interests.
On Saturday, Iran yet again defended the nuclear deal withthe country's president saying thatDonald Trump cannot changethe fact that the agreement is "irreversible."
The historic nuclear deal betweenthe leading global nations, including the United States, Russia, France, Germany, China, the United Kingdom, and Iran was signed onJuly 14, 2015 afteryears ofhigh-scale tension overthe nuclear program ofthe Islamic Republic.
The Joint Comprehensive Plan ofAction (JCPOA), commonly referred toas the Iran Nuclear Deal, was signed inJuly 2015 byIran and the P5+1 group ofnations comprised ofthe United States, Russia, China, France and the United Kingdom plus Germany afteryears ofdiplomatic work.
Donald Trump called theJCPOA, negotiated underPresident Barack Obama's watch "an embarrassment" tothe United States duringhisspeech tothe UN General Assemblyand has repeatedly criticized it duringhis presidential and election campaign.
