A senior Iranian commander says the Islamic Republic's Army Ground Forces have launched 3-day military exercises in the countrys southwestern Khuzestan Province.Brigadier General Ahmadreza Pourdastan announced the launch of the drills, codenamed Khatam al-Anbia, on Saturday.
The Iranian commander said the military maneuvers would include exercises by tanks, artillery and mechanized units.
Earlier on Saturday, the Iranian Army Ground Forces had announced that it planned to test-fire three types of new indigenous missiles during upcoming military drills.
The missiles which have undergone lab tests will be test-fired during the planned maneuvers, Deputy Commander of the Iranian Army Ground Forces Brigadier General Kioumars Heidari said.
Over the past few years, Iran has held several military drills to enhance the defense capabilities of its armed forces and to test modern military tactics and equipment.
The Islamic Republic has repeatedly assured other nations, especially its neighbors, that its military might poses no threat to other countries, insisting that its defense doctrine is based on deterrence.
