Commander: Iran’s Army and IRGC to hold a joint drill this week

10 Nov 2012 - 21:01

The Iranian Army and the Islamic Revolution Guards Corps (IRGC) are scheduled to hold a massive joint drill in the eastern parts of the country, a senior Army commander says.

Commander of Khatam al-Anbiya Air Defense Base Command Brigadier General Farzad Esmaili announced that the 7-day maneuver dubbed "Modafe’an-e Aseman-e Velayat 4," (Defenders of Velayat Skies 4) will be carried out in an area of more than 850,000 square kilometers on Monday (Nov 12) by units from the IRGC and other forces of the Army.

The two-fold maneuver aims at displaying the full strength and preparation of Iran’s air defense forces to defend the Islamic Republic’s eastern borders, Brigadier General Farzad Esmaeili was quoted as saying.

Long-range tactical radar systems, stationary electronic surveillance systems, smart lookout systems, air defense aircraft, fighter jets, transport planes, offensive and defensive electronic warfare equipment, and missile systems will be used during the war games, the Iranian commander added.

The maneuver comes amid escalating tensions between Iran and the West over the country's peaceful nuclear program, and Israel's repetitive claims of an imminent attack against Iran's nuclear sites.

Iran has repeatedly warned that any attack against its territory would have devastating consequences for Israel.
